Tempeh is a very healthy meat substitute. Because it is made by fermenting whole soybeans, it is a very different product than tofu. Variety is always nice, but out of convenience I still often just choose tofu, since I am more familiar with it. This recipe for spicy sticky tempeh does make me buy tempeh more often.
The recipe is inspired by a recipe from Vegan soul food by Jason Tjon Affo ️. The main difference is that I like to make the marinade a little more moist for an extra sticky result. I also fry the tempeh crispy in the airfryer instead of red cabbage
This spicy sticky tempeh is delicious to serve as a side dish with a variety of meals. Eat this tempeh with a bowl of noodles or on a buddha bowl. Or serve it on a sandwich with some lettuce and pickled red cabbage. Or - like me - just snack on it without anything on the side.

Preheat the airfryer to 200°C. Put the tempeh strips in a bowl and mix with the oil. Fry the tempeh in 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Stir halfway through
Meanwhile, make the sauce. Mix together the remaining ingredients. It should have the consistency of barbecue sauce. If necessary, add an extra splash of water
When the tempeh is ready, heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil . Fry the tempeh with the sauce for a few more minutes until the sauce has thickened a bit and is sticky
